A NEW COUNTY TEAM

A new County representative team took the field at Old Sharlston Cricket Club on 25 May 2009. Yorkshire Visually Impaired Cricket Club played its first match, a 20-20 game against a side from Lancashire, and came away with a resounding win, an encouraging sign ahead of next season in the competitive world of the BCEW National League.

16 of the current 19 player squad were at the ground and, after numerous recounts, three volunteers were chosen to bolster the Lancashire numbers. Having won the toss, Yorkshire skipper Shah Miah chose to bat and openers Tafazal Naqvi and Nick Killham made their way to the wicket, wearing their Yorkshire 20-20 shirts for the first time. As the innings progressed, the Yorkshire players became more and more confident with excellent innings from Tafazal Naqvi (48), John Garbett (46, retired) and Shah Miah (38) contributing to a daunting total of 196 for 3 from their 20 overs.

This confidence continued as Yorkshire took the field and gave the tight bowling and athletic fielding a constant stream of support and encouragement. Wickets fell quickly and, with the exception of Steve Wadsworth's aggressive 52, none of the Lancashire players managed to register double figures. Again, John Garbett (a miserly 2 for 4 from 4 overs) and Shah Miah (5 for 19 from four overs) were outstanding. The extras total of 18, in contrast to Lancashire's 40, is a testament to the quality of the bowling throughout the innings. Lancashire finished on 83 for 11, well short of the target and the Yorkshire players were so
excited by the outcome of their first match that they seemed unwilling to leave the wicket.

The match was the culmination of six months of hard work by players and volunteers and represents a milestone in cricket for the visually impaired in the County. The day was excellently organised by Eric Ball
and his committee at Old Sharlston CC, the weather was kind with brilliant sunshine for much of the day and only a light shower as the game came to an end. We are also very grateful to Ian Leather, the Development Manager from the North Visually Impaired Cricket Board and to the Lancashire players who travelled so far to give us our first game. The Yorkshire CCC shop has generously supplied the squad's shirts at a discounted rate.
