BBS Cup News

28th June 2010

Although we were not involved this season, I can bring you news on the semi finals of the cup.

The games had very different outcomes from each other as London Metro beat South Wales Dragons by 3 wickets at Highgate Wood in a very tense match and at Sussex CCC's Blackstone training ground, the Sussex Sharks thrashed Warwickshire Bears by 10 wickets, bowling out the visitors for a paltry 39 runs before easily knocking off the runs required without losing a wicket.

This all means that London Metro will take on the Sussex Sharks in the final at the Rose Bowl on Saturday 21st August.

YVICC Beaten By Sussex

25th June 2010

It was a disappointing weekend for the Yorkshire team as they lost twice in two days to the south coast side.

On Saturday they played a Twenty20 quarter final game high up on the west side of Sheffield, in a howling wind and low temperature.

Whilst it was the same for both teams, Sussex adapted better to the conditions and kept Yorkshire down to 109 runs.

They then proceeded to knock the runs off easily having 6 overs to spare at the end.

The league match at Old Sharlston on the Sunday was a closer affair but once again Yorkshire failed to put enough runs on the board after electing to bat first and again Sussex ran the score up with overs to spare.

After a slow start Yorkshire picked up the pace and put good pressure on the opposition taking the wickets of the top four Sussex batsmen.

Man of the match was Alex Towers who was controversially given out stumped when batting well and who went on to take 3 wickets for 25 runs, including a caught and bowled.

It was our first ever home national league game and was a fine occasion enjoyed by all who were present.

Immediate Success for New Hull Club

15th June 2010

After sending our coaches over to Hull to train the new Hull V.I. team for just three sessions, we have unearthed a quality player already in the guise of Jason Adams, who has been included in the Yorkshire VICC first team for their Twenty20 cup quarter final in Sheffield on Saturday 19th June.

Jason, who played a high level of red ball cricket before his sight deteriorated, impressed coaches Mark Beckles Willson and Atif Rafiq immediately with his batting style and will be a great addition to the Yorkshire squad.

Their are other promising players in the Hull group and we will continue to send our coaching teams over to help them along.

The sessions are from 4 pm to 7 pm at Hull cricket club every other Friday, the next one being on Friday 25th June.

Historic Win For Yorkshire

14th June 2010#

After two defeats against tough opposition , Yorkshire VICC came good and notched up their first ever win in the national competitions.

The team put in a fine performance to totally outplay the Northants Steelbacks and win by 215 runs, at the Obelisk cricket ground in Northampton.

The home side won the toss and invited Yorkshire to bat and they posted an impressive total of 272 for 8 before declaring after 35 overs.

There was a solid knock of 55 from Taf Naqvi, who was unlucky to be given out, but the star of the show was undoubtedly Arif Malik with a classy innings of 96.

There was also good support from Alex Towers and Phil Green and an impressive running performance from captain, Atif Rafiq.

This all meant that Yorkshire had 25 overs in which to bowl Northants out and they managed to do this with 5 overs to spare, leaving the hosts 57 all out.

Yorkshire stuck to their five main bowlers in Rafiq, Naqvi, Towers, Malik and John Garbett, all bowled very tightly indeed and were helped by some quality close in fielding from Adam Ferguson, Qasib Nazir, Tanveer Mansur and wicketkeeper, Ricky Coleman.

This was a fine all round team performance and will give them the confidence to go on and pick up more good results as the season unfolds. Yorkshire 272-8 [35 overs]

Northants 57 all out [19.1 overs]

He comes highly recommended and has plenty of experience of scoring at a high level.

A big welcome to Geoff from all at the club.

Yorkshire Well Beaten by London Metro

10th June 2010

Yorkshire VICC were knocked out of the BBS cup at the quarter final stage on Saturday by a strong Metro team, who have won this trophy for the past two seasons.

The match was played at Highgate Wood cricket ground in north London and in the blazing early afternoon sun Yorkshire elected to field first.

Chances came early on but the visitors unfortunately dropped five catches and this cost them dearly, as the Metro opening batsman and England captain Matt Dean, went on to make 172 not out as the London team posted a total of 278 for 3 from their 30 overs.

Yorkshire were always up against it and chasing the game, especially after a 40 minute rain break.

A revised total left them needing 145 from 13 overs after losing vital wickets before the break and they were left with 97 for 7 after the allotted overs.

The main positive to be taken from the day was that despite being under the cosh for long periods the team didn't give up and kept going right to the end.

Yorkshire Beaten in First League Game

24th May 2010

The Yorkshire VICC took to the field for it's first ever national league game at Leamington Spa on Saturday 15th May.

They faced a Warwickshire Bears team that was made up of five experienced international players and a group of younger , newer players.

Yorkshire won the toss and decided to bowl first and this looked like a good decision as Arif Malik bowled the England opener Andy Power, with the first ball of the game.

This brought together two more top England stars in Luke Sugg and Nathan Foye and after Sugg was dropped on 15, the two of them took control of the match with Foy making 98 and Sugg finishing on 140 not out, as the Bears posted 287for 3 wickets, declaring after 27 overs.

This meant that Yorkshire had 33 overs to play with in their innings and started brightly moving the score along quickly.

However, wickets began to fall regularly and at the 15 over drinks interval they were 146 for 5.

After this break, the lower order collapsed and the team were all out for 157 from 22 overs, John Garbett, batting at number 3, was still there at the end on 60 not out.

Despite a mixture of nervousness and over excitement from many of the players the team must be congratulated on their efforts to keep going when the odds are against them and this bodes well for the future.

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE TOURNAMENT

Yorkshire players have enjoyed a very good two day event in Nottingham this weekend. where they were involved in two full days of VI cricket against challenging opposition and were also able to get together on Saturday night for their first social gathering.

Matches took place against established V.I. cricket clubs in Northants and London Metros and also against a number of development teams from the northern VI cricket board.

It was great experience for our players and a chance for them to move their standard on to the next level.

The club meal on Saturday also gave people a chance to get to know each other off the field too.

Congratulations must go to one of our junior players, Max Conway, who got an award for being one of the players of the tournament.

SATURDAY 8th AUGUST 2009

WARWICKSHIRE TOURNAMENT

The team embarked on it's first trip outside Yorkshire today with a visit to the long running annual Warwickshire Tournament at Marston Green near Birmingham.

The competition also included established blind cricket clubs: Warwickshire Bears, London Metros and Hampshire, who are in their first season in competitive V.I. cricket.

The Yorkshire players excelled themselves on the day and came away with their first trophy after beating all three teams in an exciting days cricket.
